Another of the most popular natural yeast infection cures is something you probably already have in your refrigerator. Yogurt has been proven to be a very effective treatment for yeast infections. However, the methods for using it vary.
Some say that eating yogurt on a regular basis will keep the armies of yeast at bay. This is true– though it’s always best to eat unsweetened plain yogurt as opposed to the typical grocery store brand which contain tons of refined sugar or fructose. Sugar should be avoided at all cost when trying to prevent or treat a yeast infection as yeast feeds off of sugar. Plain yogurt may taste a little bland—but just add a few strawberries or other fruit for taste.
Others suggest that you should take unsweetened plain yogurt and apply it directly to the vagina as needed for relief. Again, since yeast feeds off of sugar, using sweetened yogurt could make your yeast infection worse—not to mention the sticky mess it would make. Plain yogurt contains L-acidophilus. As we discussed previously L-acidophilus is a good preventative and treatment for yeast infections because it maintains and/or restores the healthy normal bacteria in your vagina.
Applying the yogurt is made easy by coating a tampon with yogurt and inserting it at bedtime. You would also want to wear a pad to bed as this method can be a somewhat messy otherwise.
There are differing opinions as to how long to leave the yogurt in your vagina, however there seems to be more evidence that leaving it in for several hours may be of better benefit than washing or douching it away after a couple of hours. Try both methods to see which works for you if you’re unsure which to use. Begin by waiting a couple of hours before washing and if you don’t get good results, try extending the time until you get relief.
