Candida Diet – Say “Bye-Bye” To Sugar and Carbs!
We’ve already established that yeast infections are the bane of a woman’s existence—right? The itch, the smell, the discomfort—and worst of all, they don’t go away easily! Many alternative medicine practitioners feel that following a candida diet is an essential tool in getting rid of yeast infections for good.
As we’ve discussed previously, yeast, or candida albicans is a fungus that lives naturally in your digestive tract and vagina. Usually the levels are kept under control by a strong immune system, and probiotic (good) bacteria inside the body.
However, when your immune system becomes weak, candida can multiply, spread and run rampant in your body.
A candida diet is widely thought by holistic medicine practitioners to have a positive effect on candida overgrowth and it’s associated symptoms. After all, it only makes sense that eating foods that introduce additional yeast into your body is not a good idea.
In his 1983 book, The Yeast Connection: A Medical Breakthrough, Dr. William Crook M.D., explains his belief that a yeast syndrome is the root cause of the increasing numbers of candida and yeast infections in women and men today.
Unfortunately, many traditional medical doctors believe such a yeast syndrome is over diagnosed in the holistic medical community. Indeed, many medical doctors even still question whether or not a yeast overgrowth causes adverse effects in people at all!
In addition, traditional medicine often fails to connect the dots between a healthy diet and a strong immune system that is resistant to infections and illness.
So just what does a candida diet consist of? Well, it’s really more about what it doesn’t consist of…
- Stay away from sugar—Sugar feeds an over growth of yeast, according to Dr. Crook. Daily carbohydrate intake should be limited and ideally should not exceed 60 grams per day—taking into account over all health, activity level, age, food allergies, etc. Stay away from breads, pastas, refined sugars and things of that sort . Meats including, chicken and turkey, vegetables (low starch) and some types of nuts are recommended instead. As yeast symptoms gradually decrease, you can slowly increase your carbohydrate intake.
- Stay away from fermented foods that contain yeast such as cheese, tomato paste, beer and mushrooms. Dr. Crook held that fungi exposure would trigger an allergic reaction , but not all believe that restricting mushrooms and the like is necessary.
Generally you should give yourself at least 4 weeks on this or any detox diet before noticing an improvement in symptoms. Once you have reached a good improvement level, then you can start introducing some of the restricted foods slowly back into your diet.
The rate of improvement on this diet really depends on you, the severity of your yeast infection, and how long you have been symptomatic. Also over all good health is also an important factor in achieving success with a candida diet.
Give this diet the “old college try” and see if it doesn’t improve or eliminate your symptoms! You might even lose a few pounds–a delightful “side effect”!
